Purpose of This Policy
This document explains exactly how we produce content at deferitappusa.com. It's published so readers can hold us accountable — and so our competitors and the brands we cover know what to expect from us.
If we ever violate this policy, please tell us at editorial@deferitappusa.com.
Our Review Process
Every product review on this site goes through five distinct stages:
Stage 1: Initial Research
We identify the product, read its official documentation, terms of service, fee schedule, and any public regulatory filings (SEC, state lending licenses, BBB profile).
Stage 2: Live Testing
We create a real account using a real bill we owe. We document every step with screenshots and notes: signup friction, identity verification, bill upload process, payment timing, customer support response, and any unexpected fees or behaviors. No simulation. No demo accounts. No talking to the company's PR team in place of testing.
Stage 3: User Review Analysis
We read at least 200 verified user reviews across multiple platforms (App Store, Google Play, Trustpilot, WalletHub, BBB). We identify recurring themes — both positive and negative — and weight them by recency and verification status.
Stage 4: Regulatory Verification
We verify the company's regulatory standing: BBB accreditation, state lending licenses where applicable, credit bureau data furnisher registration, and any pending consumer complaints with the CFPB, state attorneys general, or FTC.
Stage 5: Fact-Check & Publish
A separate team member with no involvement in the review verifies every numerical claim, fee structure, and credit-reporting statement against primary sources. The review is published only after fact-check sign-off.
Scoring Methodology
Our product ratings use a 1–5 star scale across four weighted dimensions:
- Ease of Use (25% weight)
- How quickly can a first-time user complete a real payment? Considers signup friction, UI clarity, error recovery, and mobile experience.
- Value for Money (30% weight)
- Total cost (subscription + per-transaction fees) vs. benefits delivered, including any late-fee savings, credit-building value, or hardship flexibility.
- Bill Coverage (20% weight)
- Breadth of bill types accepted, payment methods supported by billers, and reliability of payment delivery.
- Credit Building (15% weight)
- Whether payments are reported to credit bureaus, average score impact based on user data, and reporting consistency.
- Customer Support (10% weight)
- Response time, channel availability, and quality of issue resolution based on test interactions and verified user reviews.
The overall score is a weighted average. We round to one decimal place. We do not adjust scores for promotional considerations.
Source Standards
We classify sources by reliability:
- Tier 1 (Primary): Official company documentation, SEC filings, state regulatory databases, credit bureau registration databases, BBB profiles, court records. Used for all factual claims about fees, terms, and regulatory standing.
- Tier 2 (Verified Secondary): Established financial publications (WSJ, Forbes, Bloomberg), academic journals, government consumer protection sites (CFPB, FTC). Used for context and historical claims.
- Tier 3 (User-Generated): Verified user reviews on Trustpilot, BBB, App Store, Google Play. Used to identify themes and capture real-world experience. Never used to make absolute claims.
- Excluded: Anonymous forums, single-source blog posts, social media without verification, the company's own marketing copy as a sole source.
Fact-Checking Process
Every published article is fact-checked by Dr. Priya Nair (or a designated alternate) before publication. The fact-check covers:
- All numerical claims (fees, scores, dates, percentages)
- All regulatory and legal claims (BBB status, license status, lawsuit history)
- All quotes and citations against original sources
- All comparisons against competitor products
If a claim cannot be verified from a Tier 1 or Tier 2 source, it is either removed or rephrased with appropriate hedging language.
Content Updates
We commit to the following update schedule:
- Reviews of active products: Reviewed at least every 90 days
- Fee & pricing pages: Reviewed monthly
- Material changes (new features, fee changes): Updated within 7 days of confirmed change
- Discontinued products: Marked clearly with date of discontinuation
Every page displays its last-reviewed date. Significant updates are noted with a changelog at the bottom of the article.
Editorial Independence
The following firewall protects our editorial integrity:
- No brand or partner sees content before publication
- No brand or partner can request changes to a published review based on commercial relationship
- Affiliate compensation does not affect product ratings, rankings, or coverage decisions
- Our editorial team has full authority over what we cover and how we cover it
- Sales/business development have no input into editorial decisions
Required Disclosures
We disclose:
- Affiliate relationships: A clear disclosure appears on every page containing affiliate links
- Free product samples: If we received a service free of charge for testing (we have not, to date), we disclose it at the top of the review
- Author conflicts: If an author has a personal relationship with anyone at a company we cover, they recuse themselves from that coverage
- Sponsored content: If we ever publish sponsored content (currently we do not), it will be clearly labeled "Sponsored" or "Advertisement" with the sponsor identified
User Submissions & Testimonials
When we include user testimonials or quotes in our content:
- We use real, verified reviews from public platforms (Trustpilot, App Store, etc.)
- We paraphrase to avoid copyright infringement, but never alter the meaning
- We never fabricate testimonials or stretch a single review to imply broader sentiment
- Both positive and critical reviews are represented proportionally to their prevalence
AI & Automation
We are transparent about our use of artificial intelligence tools:
- AI may be used for first-draft outlines, grammar checking, or research summaries
- All AI-assisted content is reviewed, edited, and signed off by a human editor before publication
- No article is published with AI-generated content that has not been verified by a human
- AI is never used as a source for factual claims — only as a productivity tool
Corrections Policy
When we make an error, we correct it openly:
- Significant errors are corrected within 5 business days of verification
- A correction note with date and explanation is added to the bottom of the affected page
- For major corrections affecting a product score or recommendation, we issue a separate update notice
- We do not silently edit articles to cover errors. Transparency over reputation.
